Every year P6 pupils in Greater Fort Willliam have a mountain bike lesson at school. They get to try out the Forestry Commission's skills equipment. This is made up of wooden ramps, see-saws, limbo poles and balance logs.
In addition children at Primary school can sign up for mountain biking lessons run at Nevis Range from Easter to October. These are run in blocks of 4-5 sessions and typically cost £5 per lesson. Sessions continue over the summer holiday, with sessions at both Nevis Range and as far afield as Wolftrax and Aviemore.
160 children also get to try out biking during the Council's summer playscheme weeks.
A festival or competition day is held every year for pupils in Lochaber in their first year at secondary school and there are plans to have a highland wide school's race series starting in 2009, with 3 age categories P6/7, S1/2 and S3-6. In 2008 there will be 4 area races in different parts of the Highlands, including the Leanachan race on 13th April, and a final is planned in the lead up to the World Cup event in Fort William in June. |
