Welcome to the Wheelers

Welcome to the website of the West Highland Wheelers. We are a progressive, family orientated cycling club based in Fort William and Lochaber. Whether you are interested in competitive local mountain bike or road bike races, getting some coaching to improve your bike handling skills, or just looking to link up with with some like minded people for a bit of social riding we hope that we are the club for you.

Races

We organise a variety of races for both adults and juniors. Chief amongst these are our Winter League series of mountain biking cross country races and our Summer Time Trials series.

Club Activities

As well as organising races  we have regular Wednesday evening mountain biking and Thursday evening road biking social rides for all levels of riders ( these even include the odd pub/cafe visit!). Amongst other things, we also hold an annual festival of biking events in the Spring, have a bike and gear sale in November and organise uplift nights at Nevis Range

Kids Club

From Spring right through until Christmas ( school holidays excepted) Kid’s Club coach led guided rides take place on Saturday Mornings at Nevis Range.

Coaching

As well as our Kid’s Club  on Saturday mornings we also have mountain biking rides for adults on Saturday afternoons at Nevis Range. These informal and fun rides are aimed at beginners and intermediates . Club coaches will be on hand for anyone wishing to get some top tips !

What do our members say about the club?

  • I have been a member of the Wheelers for 18 years now, spanning my whole career of racing bikes. Becoming a member was a great introduction to the sport and I was always proud to represent in my club jersey for my first few year’s racing. I achieved UK National podiums in youth and junior categories and took the jersey and club name onto the World Cup Downhill scene while competing at numerous rounds, including my home round of Fort William where I placed 66th place at the age of 17. The club’s winter XC league has provided an excellent training ground for my international career and the extra support linked through Nevis Range has made a huge difference for my preparation also. I have been fortunate that through this support and local encouragement I have had a brilliant time racing my bike and achieved many of my racing goals by becoming multi-time National Champion and multi-time Enduro World Series podium finisher.

I am now proud to also sign my son up to the club, to meet and ride with other kids and find a pathway of enjoyment in the sport for him, like I have done.

  • “The WHW are a friendly, welcoming club with riders at all levels. When I moved to Fort William the Wednesday night rides became my instant social life, and the encouraging atmosphere of the women’s mountain biking group developed my skills. Now over 15 years later the same atmosphere is bringing on my 2 sons who have loved attending the popular Saturday kids club.  Needless to say even no.2 son is leaving me for dust, as he races down the steeps….and now the boys are older I have found the time to get back riding with the Wed night crowd.”

  • “I did not need to feel nervous on my first ride. Everyone was super friendly and supporting.  I now can’t wait until the next evening ride!”

  • “Biking with my friends at bike club is so much fun! I wish it lasted longer!”

    Fraser, aged 8yrs
  • “I was nervous to join as I am definitely not the fastest or best rider but finally went along with my house mate and my only regret is not joining sooner.  Everyone is super friendly and happy to give pointers. Having many biking friends now it’s great seeing others whilst out on the trails. Great group of people, no one should be worried about biking abilities to join.”
