Fort to Fort 31.10.21

Well done to all the 34 riders who
took part in Sunday’s Fort to Fort. Fair to say that conditions were fairly
damp but there was a slight breeze behind ( or at least to the side). Well done
to Gary for winning by a good 7 minutes ( Cammie is gradually getting closer
though!). Great to see some new faces ( and some old faces!) doing the event. A
special mention has to go to Lindsay Jarrett who became the first person to do
the race carrying an oxygen tank. A huge thank you to Jacqui for doing the
timing and providing much needed refreshments at the end ( ably assisted by
Rachel of course). Thanks also to Alan, Norma, Lance, Amy, Ewen and Vince for
marshalling – we couldn’t do the event without you guys helping!

West
Highland Wheelers – Fort to Fort race 2017, Sunday the 22
nd October

25 riders
took part  in this year’s annual West Highland Wheelers race from Fort
Augustus to Fort William.  The weather conditions were very favourable
with light winds, no rain and even a little bit of sunshine which all meant
that the Autumnal views were almost as spectacular as the racing. Once again
the race was won by a member of the Dent family – last year it was Stephen,
this year it was his younger brother Alex who finished the race in a time of 1
hour and 48 minutes ( 3 and a half minutes ahead of the next rider). There was
a fierce race for second place, with Ed Daynes and Jamie Gall matching each
other neck and neck until the final straight when Ed’s sprint finish just
pipped Jamie to the line. Marie Meldrum was the first lady home in a time of
one hour and fifty nine minutes and was fourth overall. It was great to see 3
youngsters ( Cory Muir, Finlay Dempster and Daniel Parfitt) from the Wheelers
kid’s club attempting the race for the first time and putting in very
respectable times. Many thanks to everyone that helped with the race organisation-
in particular, Ben, Jacqui, Dave and Evelyn. Special thanks must also go to
Nevis Range for allowing us to use their pick-up truck as a sweeper vehicle.
Entry fees from the race are being donated to Mountain Rescue. The full results

Fort to Fort 2016

Near
perfect weather conditions (light winds, cool temperatures and no rain!!!)
greeted the 19 riders for this year’s Fort to Fort race. Despite the unusually
pleasant conditions causing some last minute dilemma’s about to what to wear,
hopes were high for some good times.  This indeed proved to be the case as
the race was won by Stephen Dent in the time of 1 hour 38 minutes (18 minutes
faster than last year’s winning time). Stephen had a great battle with Donald
Patterson who pushed him hard all the way along the road to the finish line and
finished a mere 7 seconds behind. Third place was taken by James Shirley who
claimed that he should get a special prize for being the first person on a
mountain bike to cross the line. Despite building up a very respectable early
lead Gary MacDonald unfortunately punctured on the infamous descent down
towards Balmaglaster and had to withdraw from the race (many thanks to Emma
Holgate for picking him up and also providing much needed water for a very
thirsty Gregor who definitely seemed surprised by the mild weather conditions!)
First lady home was Nix Forster, who beat her time from last year by a whopping
27 minutes. 2
nd lady home was Gill Barnes who beat her time from last year by an
even more impressive 32 minutes. Many thanks to everyone that helped with the
race organisation (Jacqui, Dave, Daniel, Cory, Nicola, Paul, Andy and Marian).
Special thanks must also go to Nevis Range for allowing us to use their pick-up
truck as a sweeper vehicle. Entry fees from the race are being donated to

Fort to Fort 2015

Despite
conditions being slightly better than last year’s near hurricane force winds
and torrential rain this year’s competitors still had to put up with their fair
share of wind and rain. Undeterred by the weather, 28 hardy competitors
(including Mike and Lewis all the way up from Hull) gathered for the start at
Fort Augustus and were sent off in two waves of riders. Despite having the wind
in their faces for most of the race, multiple punctures, and a rogue arrow
above Gairlochy, which forced everyone to make some unexpected route decisions,
some great racing was had. The race was won by Ben Thomson who was one of only
two riders to complete the course in less than two hours. Alex Dent was just
over the two hour mark and did extremely well to finish as the first junior and
third overall (he also beat his dad by two minutes!). First lady home and 10
th overall
was Frances Dent.  Many thanks to all the marshals (Kim, Marie, Dave,
Daniel, Gregor,  Ilona  and the MacCallum family) who also braved the
rain and did such  a great job. Thanks also to Nevis Range for allowing us
the use of their pick-up truck as a sweeper wagon.     Full results

 James
Shirley “storms” to victory !

Due to somewhat inclement conditions ( a Met Office amber weather warning being in
place!) a
slight concession was made to the well being of riders by deciding to run the race in reverse and go from Fort William to Fort Augustus. This would at least mean the riders having the storm force winds and lashing rain on their backs most of the way rather than in their faces! 15 hardy riders arrived at the very wet start line and despite one or two mishaps ( most noticeably two punctures for Marie) all 15 made it to the finish line in Fort Augustus. All riders seemed to finish with a smile on their faces. Whether this was down to enjoying the race or the fact that they could finally put on dry clothes is uncertain! Fresh from a summer season riding Enduro races in Europe James Shirley cruised to victory in a time not too far off a Fort to Fort record ( if he had not spent the first half of the race chatting to Ben Thompson then he would surely have beaten the record!) Despite being up with James
for about two thirds of the race, brake failure meant that Ben had to run down any hills
and he was subsequently overhauled by Gavin Maclean and John Shirley. Fiona Mellor was the
first
lady home and was 7th overall. Special mention should be made of John MacIver who was the only junior in the race and who posted a very respectable time. Over £100 in entry fees and other contributions has so far been generated to donate to Highland Hospice in the name of Corinna MacDonald. Special thanks must be given to all the marshalls and timekeepers who also braved the exceptional conditions – let’s hope for sunshine next year!

 WEST HIGHLAND WHEELERS

FORT TO FORT – 28TH OCT 2012

After a glorious week, the weather typically turned to a wet south-westerly for the annual Fort to Fort event. Riders were not disheartened and turned up in Fort Augustus, eager to set off into the puddles and mud. Ben Thompson was the first one home, taking advantage of a well-geared cyclo-cross bike to outsprint Ben Miller, Stephen Burns and Ewan Thorburn. The latter three all finished within a wheel length of each other and just an outstretched arm from the winner. Mairi Meldrum proved to be too strong and won the ladies event, out-pacing a well-placed Christina Bell with Emma Holgate taking third.

Many thanks to British Waterways Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland, Lochaber Rugby Club and the many volunteer helpers.

WEST
HIGHLAND WHEELERS

FORT TO FORT – 30th October 2011

 The rain

relented briefly for the annual Fort 2 Fort event, this year reaching its
twentieth anniversary. A strong south-westerly meant that times were a lot
slower than last year. The 2 Bens, Gavin and Ewan fought a hard battle at the
front, Ben Thompson having to retire as his mech blew up. Gavin Shirley pipped
Ewan Thorburn on the line to take victory. Nix was first lady home with Ben
Miller taking the first junior award. Alex Dent (a mere 10 years old) led his
mum home to a very respectable time for them both. A few cyclo cross bikes were
seen as entrants tried to squeeze a little extra advantage from the choice of
wheels. Thanks to Andrew and Colleen for helping to mark the course, Colleen
for timing, Ilona, Lorna and Fiona for marshalling the key junctions, to Marian
Austin for the lantern rouge role and Fiona Gunn and Jim Shearer for acting as
broom wagon. Also a word of thanks to the Great Glen team and Lochaber Rugby
Club for all their assistance.

 WEST HIGHLAND WHEELERS

FORT TO FORT – 31st October 2010

The monsoon
relented to give the riders a really fine day for this year’s event from Fort
Augustus to Fort William. A group of 3 riders led the field with Gavin Shirley
taking a narrow victory from Ben Thompson and Geoff Martin. A strong ladies
contingent resulted in Hannah Barnes breaking the 2 hour mark, ahead of Nix and
Julie Corner who both finished well up the field. Angus Burnside deserves a
special mention for completing the course in a very acceptable time for someone
of 12 years of age. There were several riders who were happy to enjoy the
spectacular views and to complete their own personal challenges. Fos regretted
buying cheap Chinese inner tubes and failing to lift his bike out of the back
of the shed since his holiday. Thanks to Colleen for managing the dysfunctional
timing system, Ilona, Lorna, Maggie, Fiona, Ruari and Ian Dewar for marshalling
the key junctions, to Steve Bradley for the lantern rouge role and Jim Maxwell
for acting as broom wagon. Also a word of thanks to the Great Glen team and
Lochaber Rugby Club for all their assistance

WEST
HIGHLAND WHEELERS

FORT TO FORT – 25th October 2009

After a gap
of a few years, the Fort to Fort event was resurrected for 2009. John Ireland
prepared the groundwork and Lynda Dodd from the Great Glen Way kept order with
all the relevant stakeholders.

The weather wasn’t too bad in that the headwind was acceptable, given conditions
experienced in
previous years. Dust from the forest road didn’t prove to be an issue either. 44 riders signed on with 2 not making it to the finish due to a plague of punctures.

Mairi Meldrum managed 50 metres before snapping her chain but some stalwart work from the sweeper, Andrew Foggo, soon got her back on her way.

Thanks to Andrew, Colleen, Ilona Linfield and family, Roddy Wells and Ian Dewar for
marshalling
the key junctions and to Jim Maxwell for acting as broom wagon.
