The next round of the Winter League is at Sutherland’s Grove, Barcaldine on the 16th January and is being very kindly  run for us by North Argyll Cycling Club.

Committee Minutes

Committee meeting minutes 08/12/21

West Highland Wheelers Committee Meeting Tuesday the 8th of December 2021 on Zoom

Present; Doug Little, Marian Austin, Dave Parfitt, Jacqui Parfitt, Norma Marshall, Steve Bradley, Mark Clark.

Apologies; Norman Clark, Ian Pooleman, Ailsa Pooleman

Trail Maintenance.

Steve brought up that it is important for leaders at Kid’s Club (and for the rest of us) to take care in deciding which trails to go down according to current conditions. A lot of damage was done to Rainbow Nation last Saturday morning following the previous days torrential rain.

It would be good in the future to try to do some more trail maintenance sessions after morning Club sessions. Learning about how to build trails and proper trail etiquette is an important part of what kid’s club should be about.

Xmas Handicap.

  • Good to go for Sunday the 19th Dec.  on the normal route in Glen Nevis. Meeting from 10.15 onwards in Braveheart Car Park.
  • Everyone to bring presents up to a value of £6.00 for the lucky dip at the end.
  • As per the Winter League races, High School kids can race unaccompanied. Primary age kids wishing to do the whole race need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • There will be a shorter kid’s version which will start after all the riders in the main race have left.
  • Doug and Gregor are happy to help Andy out with course marking etc.

Winter League.

  • Numbers for the first two races have been relatively low. Not too sure of the reasons for this but we definitely need to make sure that information about the races gets out timely. With this in mind, Jacqui and Norma are going to have a separate zoom meeting so that Jacqui can pass on to Norma tips as to how best to use mail chimp.

Provisional Schedule for the rest of the series is below

            DATE                                    VENUE                             ORGANISER                        KID’S RACE

Tuesday 28th DecemberNevis Range – Clare Mackintosh Memorial raceVince and Cammie  MackintoshYes
Sunday 16th JanBarcaldineNACCyes
Sunday Feb 6thWhitebridge, InvergarryVince MackintoshPossibly
Sunday Feb 27thStrontianJo and James TaitProbably
Sunday March 20thWolftrax??????????????Probably
April 15th – 18thEaster
Sunday ???????Nevis Range – possible Enduro?Steve?Probably
  • Wolftrax are happy for us to come on the 20th of March. For future reference, anyone organizing a race should contact Christian at Wolftrax in the first instance rather than Forestry to check if everything is ok. We need an organizer for this race ( risk assessment and course map have already been done by Jamie)
  • The planned date for the last race of the 24th of April clashes with a Scottish Enduro race at Nevis Range, so we shall need to look at an alternative date. Steve is happy to organize the race and will liase with Spook as to when would be a good date. It will definitely be important to limit numbers for the Enduro.

Committee positions.

  • It would be great if Jodie was willing to come on to the committee. Doug will check with her if she is still interested.
  • We need to get a youth representative. Maybe best to ask in a kid’s club email
  • Paul Jefferies has offered to help with Facebook.
  • We need someone who will keep on top of ensuring that all coaches qualifications are up to date and to look at organizing training courses.

Wed nights.

  • Storm Arwen has ruled out Strone as a potential venue for some time. All the other venues which Gregor posted recently are good to go, apart from the odd fallen tree.

Time Trials.

  • It would be good if Alastair, Dave, or Emma would be able to come to the next meeting in

February in preparation for next year’s series of races.

Kid’s Club.

  • The last session before the winter break will be this Saturday the 11th.
  • Cory and Nina recently completed their level 1 British Cycling leadership course with Mike Pescod – many congratulations. Daniel, Cole and Joseph also did some training with Mark Clark to get them ready for doing the official course next year. They, together with Evan, Fraser, Kai, Kieran, and Rory have all been doing a fantastic job in the kid’s club sessions helping out with the leading of the younger groups. We are hoping to run another Level 1 course for 16-year-olds in the Spring.
  • Many thanks to Lochaber Sports Association for giving us a grant of £380 to help with the course.

Pump Track

  • It has been confirmed that the pump track received a grant of £290,000 from the Scottish Cycling facilities fund. A further £75,000 is required to get the project started. If anyone has any ideas how to raise this money, then Gregor would be very keen to hear from them!
  • Other donations; Garfield Weston Foundation grant – £25,000

Adult Social rides

  • Formal club organization of these rides will stop next Saturday. However, the ladies’ group have intimated that they will carry on organizing rides themselves over the winter.
  • It would be great to start formally organized rides again in the Spring.
  • James Bracher at Scottish Cycling has written an extremely positive article about the ladies group. We are not sure yet where (or when) it is going to be published.

Bank Balance

  • Currently stands at £11,185. Doug estimates that it will go down to around £ 10,000 by Christmas as several payments will be going out soon for Child protection courses, a first aid course and Mike’s Level 1 course.

Any Other Business.

  • Electric Trishaw -we have been awarded a grant of £9800 from The Highland Council Wards Discretionary Fund. This will enable the Wheelers to become a “chapter” of “Cycling without age” which has proven so popular in Inverness. The grant will enable us to purchase one electric trishaw, to get training for pilots and insurance and maintenance for two years. Lisa McGillvray is happy to do all the administration for the project. She will also store the bike in her shed in the first instance. Once the pump track project gets going, then this might be a good area to store it as Gregor is keen to get disability cycling involved with the project.  The initial focus will be to get care home residents out for small journeys.
  • An order has gone into the Big Bobble Hat company for 50 Wheelers branded bobble hats. These cost £18 per person and the aim would be to sell them on at somewhere near this price. We are hopeful that they will be here by Christmas, but unfortunately this is not guaranteed. The Big Bobble Hat company can also do Wheelers branded buffs and it was agreed that these would be good to give out instead of T-shirts for anyone who completes at least 3 Winter League races.
  • Marian has done a great job in collating much of the information required from Scottish Cycling in order to get club affiliation for next year.
  •  It would be good for the club to organize a first aid course regularly every spring (and possibly in the Autumn) to help to ensure that all Leaders can stay up to date. It would also be good, going forward, to have a designated person who can keep on top of qualification requirements for all the leaders.
  • To help to ensure that all leaders are members of Scottish Cycling it might be good to look at discussing whether the club pays for this cost – further discussion needed.

Next Meeting – Tuesday the 8th of February at 7.00.

Social Rides

LAST ADULT SOCIAL RIDE OF THE YEAR 18/12/21

Despite starting in freezing fog at Nevis Range base station we finally managed to climb high enough to get into the sunshine and witness a stunning cloud inversion. A great way to finish what has been a great year of Saturday afternoon rides – especially when Jacqui produced some delicious Mince Pies! Many thanks to everyone that has been coming to the sessions, they have been great fun! We are looking forward to seeing you on the trails during the winter and we are definitely planning to start formally organising the rides again in the Spring.

Kid's Club

new level 1 leaders

Huge congratulations to Nina Cameron and Cory Muir who have just qualified as British Cycling Level 1 MTB Leaders. To achieve this they had to complete 2 days training with Mike Pescod, and they are now helping out with leading the younger riders in the club. Having come right through the club from an early age it is really great to seem them now inspiring these younger riders! Some of the other older teenagers ( Evan Macdonald, FrasDaniel Parfitt, Rory Gilfillan, Kai Frost,Cole Jackson, Joseph Tait, and Kieran MacDougal) have also been helping out with the younger groups and have been getting some great feedback from riders and coaches alike – well done! Many thanks to Lochaber Sports Association for providing us with a grant to help with the Level 1 course, and thanks also to Mark Clark for providing training for some of those not on the course. We are aiming to run another Level 1 course next Spring.

Winter League

WINTER LEAGUE ROUND 2 – GLEN LOY 05/12/21

Well done to all the racers ( both young and not so young) who took part in the second round of this years Winter League. Despite all the efforts of Storm Arwen Mark Clark laid on a couple of great courses. Special mention must go to Gary Macdonald, who despite trying to ” fatten” up and also having no motor, managed to complete one more lap than the rest of the field. Many thanks to Mark for all his efforts, and everyone else that helped with the marshalling, timekeeping and baking! The next race is the Claire Mackintosh Memorial race on the 28th of December, run by Vince and Cammie at Nevis Range.

Races will be free of charge for members. For non members the charge will be £2 for children and £5 for adults.

Rather than T shirts for those that complete 3 races we are looking at the possibility of providing mugs.

It was suggested that it would be a good idea to have some shorter, possibly less technical options available when possible in order to encourage members who might be slightly apprehensive about taking part. These courses might also be suitable for older children who do not necessarily wish to take part in the full races. Mandy Watson volunteered to look into these options.

Xmas Handicap

Many thanks to Andy for once again organising this. To be held on Sunday the 19th of Dec.

Bike Festival -it would be great to get this back up and running next year in the Spring. If there is a person or people who would like to put themselves forward as main organisers for this that would be great. The committee would of course be willing to help with this.

Website

Many thanks to those that have worked on this. Most notably, Shaun, Evelyn, Amy, Robbie Mark and Doug. This is still definitely a work in progress and there are things that needed to be added. In particular, access to past files/results. We are looking for someone to help keep the website updated and help to progress it .

Membership

At present there are 369  members ( 2019 -346, 2020-247). 103 female adults and 38 female juniors, 151 male adults and 77 male juniors.

Time Trials

Great to see Time trials back on the agenda. There were 7 races held this year. A Huge thanks to Dave, Emma and Alastair for organising these. Many thanks also to everyone who helped with marshalling and timekeeping. A special thanks to Pete Berrie for stepping into the breach when needed!

Saturday Social Rides

These were an experiment this year but seem to have been going well. There has been a steady stream of ladies and e-bikers. Will take a break from Xmas to the end of the ski season , but will definitely resume next Spring. Many thanks to all those that have come and those that have helped run them.

Wed nights

Numbers have been up and down but generally good with a good few new faces. Many thanks to Gregor for putting together the schedules.

Treasurers Report

Gill reported that things are looking healthy and that the bank account is £1000 up on last year. After a considerable amount of effort by Gill we now have access to internet banking – many thanks!

Kid’s Club

Started again in Spring and has been going well. The last group of sessions for this year start up again on Saturday and will run until the 11th of Dec before taking a break until next Spring. If everyone turns up this Sat then there will be 86 kids in 12 groups + we have 9 teenagers helping with the coaching of the younger groups. These teenagers have pretty much been coming to the club right through from a younger age , so it is great to see them going to the next level and giving back. The aim, with the help of Mike Pescod, is to help them get their level 1 leadership qualification ( their first step on the coaching ladder.)

  • 6 new leaders qualified this year. Including 4 ladies + 3 who have done their training.
  • Girl’s group started up this year which has been going well.
  • Waiting list –We have been trying to continually get on top of it, but it is still there. The main problem, perhaps surprisingly, is not necessarily the lack of qualified leaders but all the organisation involved in getting so many kids out at the same time. With this in mind, a special thanks must go to Claire for doing such a great job in keeping on top of admin and Gregor for sorting out the groups (the record was 10 versions of a rota one week). Thanks of course to everyone else on the committee.
  • Blue Doon – A massive thanks to Nevis Range for letting 54 kids and 20 leaders get a pre-opening free run.
  • Lastly, a massive thanks to all of the leaders and parent who have all given their time voluntarily to help get the groups out and keep the spirit of the club going.

Election of Office bearers and the committee

Stepping down – Evelyn, Nix, Shaun, Ruby ,Fraser.

Doug thanked everyone for all the great work that is carried out by everyone on the committee .

  2. Jodie Standen was proposed by Nix ( seconded by Gregor), as a good person to get involved with developing the website and blog. Doug will approach her personally about this.

Subscription Rates

 to remain the same for next year;

  • Juniors £8
  • Senior £17
  • Family £28

AOCB

  • Scottish Cycling Affiliation. This is up for renewal and the information that Scottish Cycling require seems to be getting ever more complex. One thing we definitely need to ensure in the future is that we have up to date information on coaches with regards to  qualifications and renewal dates. Further discussion about how to achieve this is needed.

Winter League

winter league race -nevis range 21/11/21

13 Adults and 10 juniors took part in the First races of the 2021/2022 Winter League series. The adults raced around the Cour Loop, whilst the juniors raced as many laps as possible around a small loop at the Nevis Range base station. Cammie Mackintosh triumphed in the adult race and once again managed to even out pace the e-bike riders! There was some great racing in the junior races with some exciting family rivalry developing! Many thanks to everyone who helped with timing, marshalling, course setting, tree clearing and of course the baking. The next race is at Glen Loy ( Strone side) on the 5th of December. Watch out for posts giving details about the race on facebook.

Fort to Fort

Fort to Fort 31/10/21

Well done to all the 34 riders who took part in Sunday’s Fort to Fort. Fair to say that conditions were fairly damp but there was a slight breeze behind ( or at least to the side). Well done to Gary for winning by a good 7 minutes ( Cammie is gradually getting closer though!). Great to see some new faces ( and some old faces!) doing the event. A special mention has to go to Lindsay Jarrett who became the first person to do the race carrying an oxygen tank. A huge thank you to Jacqui for doing the timing and providing much needed refreshments at the end ( ably assisted by Rachel of course). Thanks also to Alan, Norma, Lance, Amy, Ewen and Vince for marshalling – we couldn’t do the event without you guys helping!
